Masai Mara is the undoubtedly the best animal reserve in Kenya. You can observe a dozen different species or more at one time Gazelle, Jackals, Ostrich, Zebra, Buffalo, Giraffe, Wildebeest, Elephant, Hyena and pride of Lions waiting for a chance. Traditionally the Masai lived in accord with wildlife, hunting only lions and in times of food shortage, eland and buffalo. When the earliest European hunting safari made Masai Mara world-famous in the early years of previous century, they were ransacking an expanse recently abandoned by the Masai. Communities had torn through their cattle herds. By 1961, the European hunters had accomplished in bringing the Mara's lion population to nine and Masai Mara was created as a game sanctuary- and a tourist attraction to be administered by the Masai District council Narok.
The Masai Mara reserve is a great block of rising and falling grassland in the sparsely inhabited southwest part of the country and an extension of the even bigger Serengeti plains in Tanzania. This is a land of small grasses where Masai Mara climate is predictable with sufficient rain and the new grass supports an annual wildebeest migration, Kenya of animals from the dry plains of Tanzania.
To travel through the Masai Mara game reserve in August or September while the wildebeest are in movement is a staggering event. Like in the Serengeti, the wildebeest are the main inhabitants of the Masai Mara, and their numbers are estimated in the millions. The migration of wildebeest in Kenya is a phenomenon. The wildebeest migration in Kenya Masai Mara is probably the greatest demonstration on earth. The wildebeest migrate in a clockwise scheme from the Serengeti plains in Tanzania to the Masai Mara game reserve every year seeking out green pastures and water. However, there is no beginning or end of the wildebeest expedition as the animals have to graze and drink water each day of their life thus forcing the them to regularly move ahead day by day and month by month in order to survive. Another factor contributing to this impressive wildebeest migration is the coming of rains. The rain comes at diverse times in the Serengeti and the Masai Mara. During the dry season, the animals move to the park where seasoned grass is available. The annual wildebeest migration is a natural event and, timing varies year by year, month by month. The migration brings in a very large audience with the mainstream and most commonly available housing fully reserved.
